How to Convert HEIC to GIF

  1. 1

Drag one or more HEIC photos into the box above, or click it to browse and select files from your iPhone or computer — batches of files all convert together.

  2. 2

Your browser decodes each HEIC image and re-encodes it as a GIF using a WebAssembly converter running locally in this tab, so the photo is never uploaded anywhere.

  3. 3

Download each GIF individually, or click Download All to save the whole batch at once — ready to drop into a chat, forum post, or anywhere GIFs are the expected format.

Why Convert HEIC to GIF

GIF is one of the oldest image formats still in everyday use, and despite newer alternatives it remains the format chat apps, forums, and a surprising number of older content management systems expect by default. HEIC photos straight off an iPhone can't be posted to those places at all, so converting to GIF first is sometimes the only way to get a photo to display correctly in a tool that has never been updated to recognize Apple's format.

The defining trait of GIF is its 256-color palette — a limitation inherited from a format designed decades ago for simple graphics and short animations rather than full-color photography. Converting a photo to GIF maps its colors down to that smaller palette, which is perfectly fine for icons, line art, and images with large flat areas of color, but it does mean photographic detail and smooth gradients can show visible banding compared to the original. For most everyday photos, JPG or PNG will look noticeably closer to the source.

Where GIF earns its place is compatibility and simplicity: it's universally supported by even the most barebones image viewers and embedding tools, and it's the format people instinctively reach for when something needs to drop into a thread or message without any fuss. Because the conversion runs entirely inside your browser tab, your photo is decoded and re-encoded on your own device — nothing is uploaded to a server, and nothing about the file is stored anywhere once you close the tab.

HEIC vs GIF: Format Comparison

Feature HEIC GIF
Color Palette Millions of colors 256 colors max
Compression Efficient, lossy (HEVC) Lossless within limited palette
Animation Support No (single photo) Yes
Transparency No Single-color only
Typical File Size Smaller for photos Larger for photographic content
Browser/App Support Safari only (native) Universal
Best For iPhone photo storage Chat apps, forums, simple graphics
Free to Use Yes Yes

HEIC captures full-color photographic detail, while GIF trades color depth for near-universal compatibility with chat apps and older tools. Convert when a photo needs to reach a place that only expects GIF.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert HEIC to GIF?

GIF is supported by virtually every chat app, forum, and legacy web tool in existence, while HEIC — the format iPhones save photos in by default — often isn't recognized at all outside Apple's own ecosystem. Converting to GIF guarantees the image displays correctly anywhere GIFs are the expected or preferred format.

Will my image lose quality as a GIF?

Yes, to some degree. GIF is limited to a 256-color palette, so photos with smooth gradients or subtle color transitions can show visible banding compared to the original HEIC. For full-color, photographic-quality results, HEIC to JPG or HEIC to PNG will look much closer to the source image.

Does GIF support transparency?

GIF supports single-color transparency, where one palette color is treated as fully see-through, but it doesn't support the smooth, partial transparency that PNG offers. HEIC photos don't contain an alpha channel to begin with, so this distinction rarely matters for ordinary photo conversions.

Can I convert multiple HEIC files to GIF?

Yes. Drop in as many HEIC files as you like and each one converts on its own — download them individually as they finish, or click Download All once the batch is done to save every GIF at once.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The entire conversion happens inside your browser tab — your HEIC file is decoded and the GIF is created on your own device, with nothing ever uploaded, stored, or logged on a server.
