What Does HEIC Stand For?
HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It's Apple's implementation of the broader HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) standard, built to store a single photo — or a small burst of related images, like Live Photos — far more efficiently than older formats. Any iPhone from the iPhone 7 onward, running iOS 11 or later, saves Camera app photos as HEIC by default. iPads with comparable hardware do the same.
