What Is a RAW File?

If your camera can shoot in RAW but you're not sure why anyone would bother, this guide explains what RAW actually stores, how it differs from JPG, and when the extra file size is worth it.

What RAW Format Actually Is

A RAW file is the unprocessed data straight off a digital camera's image sensor — before sharpening, color correction, white balance, or compression have been applied. Think of it as a digital negative: every photosite on the sensor recorded a raw brightness value, and the RAW file stores those values largely untouched, along with metadata about the shot (lens, exposure, camera settings). Nothing has been decided for you yet, which is exactly the point.

RAW vs JPG: The Core Tradeoffs

A JPG is what you get when the camera takes that same sensor data and finishes it for you — applying sharpening, contrast, color, and white balance automatically, then compressing the result into a small file that's ready to view anywhere. A RAW file skips all of that processing, which creates a direct set of tradeoffs.

The upshot: RAW gives you the maximum possible material to work with in editing software, at the cost of a much bigger file that isn't viewable until it's been processed. JPG gives you an instantly usable image, at the cost of editing headroom you can never fully get back.

Why Photographers Shoot RAW

The entire case for RAW comes down to post-processing flexibility. Because nothing has been discarded or compressed away, a RAW file lets you recover detail from blown-out highlights or crushed shadows that would simply be gone in a JPG, adjust white balance after the fact as if you'd set it correctly in-camera, and push color grading much further before banding or artifacts show up. That extra room matters most in high-stakes or difficult lighting — weddings, landscapes at sunset, anything shot under mixed light sources — where getting every setting perfect at capture time isn't realistic.

Can I open RAW files without special software?

Not directly — most operating systems and web browsers can't render RAW sensor data on their own, since it isn't a finished image yet. You need either RAW-aware software (Adobe Camera Raw, Lightroom, Capture One, or your camera manufacturer's viewer) or a converter that decodes the RAW data and re-encodes it as a standard image format like JPG.

Does RAW take more storage than JPG?

Significantly more. A RAW file stores every bit the sensor captured, uncompressed or only losslessly compressed, so it commonly runs 20-100+ MB depending on the camera's resolution. A JPG from the same shot, compressed and stripped of the extra editing data, is usually a tenth of that size or smaller.

Is DNG universal?

DNG (Digital Negative) is Adobe's open, published RAW specification, and it's more standardized than proprietary formats like CR2 or ARW. Some cameras shoot DNG natively, and RAW converters can convert other brands' files into DNG. But "universal" only means broad software support — DNG still needs RAW-aware software to open, just like any other RAW format.

Why do RAW files look flat or dull straight off the camera?

Because no processing has been applied yet. A JPG gets in-camera sharpening, contrast, saturation, and color correction baked in automatically; a RAW file skips all of that and hands you the sensor's literal readings. That flat starting point is intentional — it's what gives editing software the room to apply those adjustments manually, with far more control than the camera's automatic processing allows.
